Diving in Belize

Belize (formerly British Honduras) is a small State of 22,964 km² (8,867 square miles, just a little smaller than Belgium), located on the north-eastern coast of Central America, bordered to the north and the northwest by Mexico, to the east by the Caribbean Sea and to the south and west by Guatemala.
The name Belize (Belice in Spanish) comes from the Mayan language and it means “road towards the sea”.
With a population estimated at 230,000 inhabitants, Belize has a low population density.
The town of Belize City is home to one third of the population (70,000 inhabitants); the two other important cities are Orange Walk (not quite 10,000 inhabitants) and the capital Belmopan (7,000 inhabitants), which is one of the smallest capitals in the world.
This small country located between Mexico and Guatemala, independent since 1981, is particularly famous for its coral islands in the Caribbean Sea: Turneffe Islands and Ambergis Caye.
Belize is the only English-speaking country of Central America, but in spite of the official status of the English language, Spanish and Belizean Creole remain the languages more commonly spoken.
Frequented by pirates a long time ago, this area is currently visited by divers from all over the world, since in this country you find the most mythical diving spots, such as the well-known Blue Hole!

Belize Diving Tour – 5 days – 4 nights – 8 dives

Getting to Belize

A four-hour minivan ride will be enough to reach Chetumal, where a fast ferry will take you to San Pedro in two hours. Of course, an English-speaking guide accompanies the group; the guide knows the region since, as a general rule, he is always the same.

San Pedro in Belize

We have established our base in San Pedro. This small town is located at Ambergris Caye, which is the largest island of the country. It is also the only place where there is a hyperbaric chamber.
Just for the record, this is the island that Madonna mentions in her song “La Isla Bonita”: “Last night I dreamt of San Pedro…”
San Pedro has a large number of dive sites. As we are on site just for three days, we privilege near-by spots, outings of approximately 15-minute navigation time.
We dive twice a day and, surprisingly, we do not use twin tanks, as we return downtown in between.
The hotel is located on the beach, and while it is not the Hilton, it is quite comfortable and peaceful.

Bélize – diving at the Blue Hole

Appointment is set at 5:30 AM. The boat is approved for forty divers.

Around nine o’clock, we arrive on site and jump into the water. Please discover the video below to form your own opinion.

Belize – Diving at the Blue Hole

After a good hour of surface interval, we dive then at Half Moon Cay, a southern dive site located about twenty minutes away.

Picnic at Half Moon Cay

About 15 minutes after being out of the water, we stop on a beautiful beach. Upon our arrival, a dish with chicken, potato salad, rice and vegetables is served to us on a few wooden tables installed on the sand. Well, it is true that we are not the only ones on the spot, but the place is really outstanding.

Night Diving at Ambergris Cay

We jump on the side of the lagoon and take a small channel to the ocean. Diving is very shallow and as the sea is choppy, visibility is not sublime as you can see on the video.

What do you eat in Belize?

There are plenty of small restaurants, one besides the other along the beach or in the city. Cuisine is simple and good. We will even end the stay at the place of a Salvadorian woman who knows how to find lobsters!

Diving sites description

Blue Hole

Depth: 46 m (150 feet)
Visibility: good
The boat ride between San Pedro and the Blue Hole takes approximately 3:30 hours. The boat’s time of departure is thus envisaged at 6:00 AM.
Impressing and gigantic are two adjectives that best characterize this site of mythical diving, one of the best known in the world. Located offshore the east coast of Belize, at the center of Lighthouse Reef, the Blue Hole is an enormous circular abyss 300 meters (near 1000 feet) in diameter and 123 meters (400 feet) deep. It was once a dry cave before being submerged during the glacial era. The ceiling finally tumbled, exposing the relief we can see today.
The Blue Hole is known for its famous stalactites and stalagmites, some of them 26 feet long! Commander Cousteau discovered them in 1972. Unfortunately, they are located very deep and are thus difficult to access.
It is, along with the distance of the site, its worst defect. The dive becomes really interesting only at 40 meters (130 feet), where the visibility is good, even though it is a little cooler.

Half Moon Caye

Depth: 20 m (65 feet)
Visibility: excellent

Impressive dive in a natural reserve: the reef is cracked with canyons, which can be easily maneuvered by divers. Soft corals are in excellent shape and there are many sponges on the site. The slope of the wall is vertiginous; the usual fauna of the reefs is present, with a great number of parrotfish. You also have the opportunity to see rays in that spot.
